CERES or the Centre for Education and Research in Environmental Strategies is a community based, not-for-profit, sustainability centre. They are located on the Merri Creek in East Brunswick with an aim to bringing together people who want to share ideas and collaborate towards a sustainable way of life.
They have several social enterprises which not only educate and provide support to various programs but they enable the centre to be self sufficient and independent. These include Fair Food, where fresh food and groceries can be purchased, picked up or delivered. Last week I had my first delivery and I have to say I was impressed with the quality and variety of my mixed fruit and veg box. The produce was so fresh and a week later I am still getting through it! Other enterprises include a nursery, organic grocery, Merri Table (cafe), Global travel programs and venue hire.
On Saturday 25th March 2017 they are having a Harvest Festival from 10am – 3pm. They will be “celebrating and giving thanks to the good earth, our farmers and the cycle of the seasons”. Activities include a bake and bottle competition, a giant vegetable growing competition, The Urban Farmer book launch, Honey Lane Hives display, a festival market, food stalls, performers, musicians and workshops. It sounds like a lovely day out and a great opportunity to teach the kids about sustainability and where our food comes from.
