All Nations Park, Munro St, Northcote

All Nations Park in Northcote is a huge public space. There’s playgrounds, gardens, walking paths, picnic areas, a basketball half court, skate ramp, chess boards, tennis/down ball wall and even outdoor gym equipment. We loved the architectural/industrial playground at the Munro Street end! This playground sits within its nature surrounds like a steel fortress – it such a nice change from the usual plastic fantastic playgrounds which abound everywhere!

There are two structures to cater for younger and older kids, however, the bigger one is the star of the show. A long walkway, which is intersected with stairs that lead to interactive play elements, directs kids to the main play area. It’s particularly suitable for kids who love climbing! There are multiple entry points, a rock climbing wall, two slides and a couple of musical/sound makers. My kids loved making a fort up here!

A smaller structure for toddlers sits not far away and it features climbing points, multiple entries, interactive elements and a slide. Spread out over the tan bark you’ll also find some swings, a balancing bench, a spinner and some cute ladybugs taking in the sun.

There’s lots of space to run around, plus a large sheltered area with picnic tables, BBQ’s and drinking fountains. Public toilets are located in the center of the whole park which is a bit of a walk away. I would also recommend you keep an eye on younger kids, near the slide and swings at the back of the playground, as it’s quite rocky and leads to a creek down the hill.

Merri Park – Sumner Avenue, Northcote

This Merri Park playground is great for kids who love climbing and conquering forts! The large wooden structure is suitable for both older and younger kids, with one end being higher and more challenging than the other. They are connected by a walkway bridge and feature several climbing points, slides, a rock wall, cubby, tunnel, fireman’s pole, monkey bars and a small flying fox.

Scattered around the nature set playground are the usual features of a nest swing, normal swings, an imaginative play boat, sandpit, and a spinner. Pack a picnic lunch as there are a few tables scattered around, as well as a water fountain. And don’t forget to bring a ball because the play area is right next to a huge open oval (which I think is shared with Northcote High School) – perfect for running around in!!

If all that fails you also have the nearby Merri Creek and the Merri Creek Trail, which is great for nature play, bikes, and scooters!
